Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100). For example, £100 plus 20% VAT is 100 × 1.20 = £120.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100). A £120 price that includes 20% VAT works out to £100 net plus £20 VAT.

Why is VAT removed by dividing, not by subtracting the percentage?

Because the gross price already includes the tax, the percentage applies to the net, not the gross. Subtracting 20% of £120 gives £96 — wrong. Dividing gives £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 — right.

What is the difference between VAT and GST?

Both are consumption taxes collected on goods and services. The UK and EU call it VAT (value added tax); Australia, New Zealand, India, Canada, and Singapore call it GST (goods and services tax). The math for adding or removing it is identical.

What are the standard VAT and GST rates?

Common standard rates include UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Australia 10%, New Zealand 15%, Singapore 9%, and Canada 5%. India uses GST slabs from 5% to 28%. Rates change — confirm the current one for your country.
