Privacy Policy
Your privacy is important to us. Learn what data we collect and how we handle it.
Our Privacy Commitment
At ToolBench, we believe in privacy by design. Our tools are free to use without an account, and most of them process your data entirely in your browser. We only collect the personal data needed to run the service, and we never sell or share it with advertisers.
Information We Collect
ToolBench does not require an account, and we do not collect personal data from anonymous tool usage. We do collect information in the following cases:
- Account email address - ToolBench uses passwordless sign-in: if you create an account, we store your email address and send you sign-in links. We never collect or store passwords.
- Tool usage analytics - We record aggregate usage events (which tool was used, when, and the event type) to understand how the service is used. If you are signed in, events may be linked to your account.
- Contact form submissions - If you contact us, we store the name, email address, and message you provide.
- Standard server logs - Like most websites, our servers log basic request information such as IP address and browser user agent, which we also use for rate limiting.
How Our Tools Work
Most of our tools (word counter, markdown preview, JSON formatter, base64, hashing, QR codes, and similar utilities) run entirely in your browser using JavaScript - the data you enter stays on your device and is never sent to our servers. A few tools require server-side processing or third-party lookups and do send your input to our servers:
- Whois lookup - the domain or IP you query is sent to our server and to geolocation services.
- Currency converter - the amount and currency pair are processed on our server to fetch exchange rates.
- Planning poker and retro boards - these are collaborative tools, so votes, cards, and comments you submit are shared with other session participants and held in server memory for the duration of the session.
Cookies and Local Storage
We use a small number of cookies and local storage, all required for the site to function. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies:
- Session cookie - keeps you signed in and protects against cross-site request forgery.
- Remember me cookie - if you choose "keep me logged in", an optional cookie lets you stay signed in for 14 days.
- Theme preference - your light/dark/system preference is stored in your browser's local storage and never transmitted to our servers.
Analytics
We use two forms of analytics, neither of which uses tracking cookies or builds advertising profiles. Internally, we record anonymous, aggregate tool usage events to understand which tools are popular. We also use Plausible Analytics, a cookieless, privacy-friendly web analytics service, to understand overall traffic. Neither system tracks you across other websites.
Third-Party Services
Some tools rely on minimal third-party services:
- OpenStreetMap - the whois map loads map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap servers to your browser, and address lookups are geocoded via OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service through our server.
- Frankfurter - the currency converter uses the Frankfurter API for exchange rates.
- Plausible Analytics - cookieless web analytics (see the Analytics section above).
- unpkg CDN - the whois map loads the open-source Leaflet library from unpkg.com.
- Email delivery - sign-in and account emails are sent on our behalf by an email delivery provider.
Data Retention
- Sign-in and session tokens expire automatically after 14 days; account deletion links expire after 15 minutes.
- Planning poker and retro board sessions are held in server memory only and are discarded when the session ends or expires.
- Aggregate tool usage events are retained until your account is deleted, at which point they are anonymized and no longer linked to you.
- Contact form submissions are retained so we can respond to and follow up on your message.
Your Rights and Account Deletion
You can permanently delete your account at any time from your account settings page (Settings, then Danger Zone). Deletion removes your email address and all session data, signs you out everywhere, and anonymizes any usage events linked to your account. You can also request a copy or deletion of your contact form submissions by emailing us at [email protected].
Children's Privacy
ToolBench is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, please contact us so we can remove it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
