What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text that has been the printing industry's standard dummy text since the 1500s, when an unknown typesetter scrambled a passage of Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil, 45 BC) to make a type specimen book. It has survived five centuries and the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged popularised in the 1960s with Letraset sheets and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker.
Frequently asked questions
What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used by the printing and typesetting industry since the 1500s. It is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's philosophical work "De finibus bonorum et malorum", written in 45 BC.
Why do designers use Lorem Ipsum?
Its distribution of word and sentence lengths resembles real language, so a layout can be judged on typography and spacing without the distraction of readable content.
Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?
It starts as real Latin but has been scrambled, truncated, and shuffled over the centuries, so it no longer carries meaning — which is exactly what makes it useful as neutral filler text.
How much placeholder text do I need?
Match the real content you expect: a typical paragraph runs 50–100 words and a full page holds roughly 400–600. Generate a little extra and trim to fit your design.
